Fonitalia is a national retailer of Oticon hearing aids in Italy. The upscale shop on Viale Abruzzi in Milano features a clean, minimalist space. The ceiling features a deep light-well where a real skylight would not be out of place. But, as is often the case, upper stories of the building prohibit real skylights. A virtual skylight, like the 120cm square Luminous SkyCeiling installed over the seated waiting area, provides a very realistic presence of sky. A visitor may only glance at it, or sense the overhead presence of sky blue, but these kinds of reminders of nature are thought to enliven our inherent biophilia, our affinity for the natural world.
